FRIENDS OF FOLK FESTIVAL - VANCOUVER 2010

Our 3rd FOFF event was held in Vancouver (Canada) on July 8th, 2010 at The Biltmore Cabaret. The Friends of Folk: Charity Concert was a showcase of the cast, crew and friends of sci-fi television series, Sanctuary. Bands included The Sun (featuring Sanctuary star Ryan Robbins, and dual Emmy-nominated composer, Rich Walters); The Earth Kings, Cory Woodward and a one-time crew band called Wexford & the Unbelievers.

On top of our amazing lineup, the event boasted face-painting by-donation, a 50/50 raffle draw, and two signed-poster auctions - one signed by cast/crew; the other signed by JACK BLACK!!!

All of the profits from the event went to support Sanctuary for Kids - the foundation Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler and Jill Bodie set up to help children in crisis.

LESLIE, MY NAME IS EVIL - REVIEW

FANGORIA review of Leslie, My Name is Evil.

"LESLIE, MY NAME IS EVIL" (Film Review)
By Trevor Parker

Let's face facts: the vacant, cross-eyed stare that lasers out of Charlie Manson mug shots is far more unsettling than any masked stalker or gore effect could ever hope to be. Thus Manson, notorious 1960s hippie prophet, murder-cult leader and Beatles obsessive, has been a reliable go-to bogeyman for many a horror filmmaker.

His image has haunted screens as the subject of a dozen documentaries and fictional retellings over the past 40 years. Like Billy the Kid and John Dillinger, he has become an icon of American crime culture whose story is destined to be told and retold down through the ages. Writer/director Reginald Harkema's new film LESLIE, MY NAME IS EVIL (opening today in Canada) takes a fresh approach to the familiar tale by choosing to focus on Leslie Van Houten (played by Kristen Hager), a Manson "family" member caught in a hypnotic spiral of drugs, folk music and random killing excursions.

LESLIE's plotting is straightforward, starting the audience off with a brief glimpse of our antiheroine's all-American teen years. It then follows her activities as they move from shaking pompoms on sidelines to dropping acid on communes with Charlie, and finally to plunging kitchen knives into helpless strangers with the rest of the "family." A second story, running parallel to Leslie's, features young couple Perry (Gregory Smith) and Dorothy (Kristin Adams). Their interests include singing hymns in church, obeying their parents' wishes and supporting the escalating war in Vietnam. The two plot threads eventually intertwine as Perry becomes a figure in the sensational Manson murder trial and is soon confronted with his own hidden desires.

Since LESLIE, MY NAME IS EVIL is concerned with the Manson saga for the most part, one might assume that it would wash the screen red in exploitative glory, as earlier films on the subject have done. Even the title encourages this assumption, sounding like it fell right off a drive-in theater marquee. Instead, the low-key LESLIE turns out to be an absorbing character study, emphasizing themes of seduction (Manson is compared to both Jesus and Dracula) and hypocrisy, as perpetrated by both Manson and the pro-military Christian establishment of the day. No art-house bore, the movie is tightly edited and unspools at a steady pace, but be warned that it offers little in the way of tension and action setpieces. All mayhem is confined to a brief reenactment of the LaBianca home invasion and one bloody, psychedelic dream sequence.

On the visual side, LESLIE succeeds in recreating the '60s on an obviously stingy budget, and the seeding in of stock footage from that era (including some disturbing Vietnam casualty shots) is particularly evocative. The movie stumbles a bit with its uneven performances; Hager does well as Leslie, but Perry and Dorothy are played broadly for comedic effect and come off as stiff Norman Rockwell caricatures. Congratulations, however, must be reserved for Ryan Robbins' portrayal of Manson. If ever a part encouraged manic Nicolas-Cage-on-Red-Bull overacting, Charlie is definitely that role, but Robbins demonstrates just the right balance of energy and restraint. His Manson feels as incipiently dangerous as a fallen beehive, but he never seems like he's trying to hijack the movie to get there.

Ultimately, this film won't satisfy viewers hungry for jump-scares or slashing scenes, but for those willing to chew over a layered and thoughtful look at what primed a typical suburban girl to kill on behalf of a gibberish-spouting lunatic, LESLIE, MY NAME IS EVIL is a mouthful.

Please read the announcement below (from Ryan Copple the creator of Riese) for more details.

Important News Regarding Riese
Posted: Friday, February 5th, 2010

As the new year rolls around, we’ve had a lot of developments with the show that we’ve been itching to tell you about. First of all, as you’ve already seen, Chapter 2’s episodes are new and improved, with higher production values, exciting story and some really amazing cast additions. Also, we’re nearly finished with the development of our iPhone game tie-in. Without giving too many details away, I think you’ll all be really excited.

We also recently partnered with Fireworks, a digital distribution branch of ContentFilm, based out of the UK. They’re largely responsible for the transition of the webseries Valemont from internet to television, and they handle a number of many other well-known webseries as well.

What does this mean for Riese? It opens up a number of opportunities. For one, it increases the chances that we can keep making this show and letting you become further involved in the world of Riese. Additionally, it boosts the possibility of us being able to distribute the series on other platforms (episode downloads, DVDs, and television).

Now, for the bad news. While Fireworks is negotiating deals on our behalf, we’ve had to remove our episodes from online streaming. We’re not happy about it by any means – we want all of our fans to enjoy Riese whenever they want – but we also understand that it’s a necessary move in order to keep a project like Riese afloat. The few of us that are responsible for producing Riese on a day-to-day basis are realistic that we cannot sustain it without the support of Fireworks and our viewers.

We hope to have everything back up as soon as possible, and we’ll keep everyone posted as we move forward. I know a lot of people will be bummed out, but just know that this slight delay could mean a whole new future for Riese. We don’t want to disappoint you all, but I know you’d be even more disappointed if we left the rest of this epic tale untold.

Thanks for being a part of something that’s been incredibly dear to us, and for helping to turn it into something greater than we could have ever imagined. We hope to have your continued support during this brief hiatus. In the meantime, look for bonus behind-the-scenes videos from our newest episodes.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at ryan (at) riesetheseries(dot)com.

Sincerely,
Ryan Copple & Kaleena Kiff Creators of Riese

RIESE THE SERIES

The Official RIESE website have posted a character bio and photos of Ryan's character RAND.

http://www.riesetheseries.com/html/rand.html

RAND

Iron-willed and unyielding, Rand is driven by despair and guilt, scarred emotionally and physically by a past he can't escape. Rand is the leader of the Resistance, a group whose goal is to stop Amara's hostile takeover of Eleysia and its surrounding countries.

His intensity has caused the displaced people of Eleysia to rally behind him, creating a group of supposed heretics and anti-Eleysian fighters hiding in the shadows of Amara's kingdom.

Despite his allegiance to this army, Rand has a hidden ambition he uses the group to fulfill. With this covert goal guiding him, Rand is willing to drive his comrades headlong into his own personal battles.

RYAN ROBBINS

Originally from Victoria, BC, Ryan Robbins is a character actor who is constantly reinventing himself. THE MASCULINE MYSTIQUE (Short Movie)

Movie Synopsis: Nate (Ryan Robbins) is alone in a run down boxing gym, working the heavy bag with fierce intensity. His best friend Darcy (Patrick Gilmore) enters the gym and quizzes Nate on why he's asked him to meet up so late at night, in this bizarre location. Nate tells him that he'd like to have a sparring match,... but Darcy refuses, claiming that he needs to sleep. Before Darcy can leave, Nate blurts out that his wife has left him. Darcy struggles for words of comfort, but is out of his element. Instead, he tells Nate to 'suck it up' and move on to greener pastures. Nate struggles to get Darcy to connect with him and stop making his pain a joke. Finally, Nate gives up and goes back to working the bag, but cannot contain his emotions. As Darcy watches in amazement, Nate unleashes a flurry of energy on the bag before breaking down and sobbing. Forced to finally confront his friend's pain, Darcy again is unable to connect meaningfully with Nate, who finally brings up the subject of Darcy's ex. Darcy immediately rebuffs him and tries to leave the gym, but Nate provokes him until Darcy takes a swing at him and Nate has to physically pin Darcy to the ground. Nate pleads with Darcy to give him the gift of sharing his painful past. In a long exchange, lying exhausted on the floor of the gym, the two men finally exchange words that will leave their friendship changed forever.

Ryan is unwell and not able to travel see text below.

"I'm sorry to do this to you, but I have to cancel my appearance at Haven 1. I've been quite under the weather for a little bit and was informed today that I have pneumonia. I won't be well enough to fly by the 1st. I'm extremely disappointed. It's a very helpless feeling and, obviously a very serious and concerning thing. I have to follow doc's orders diligently. but hope to be up and around as soon as possible. Again, I apologize. I was really looking forward to this event."

It is unfortunate but I do think everyone will understand and wish Ryan a speedy recovery.

Below is the episode synopsis from the Official jPod website ....

----------------------------------------------
Steve (COLIN CUNNINGHAM) has gone missing. Ethan (DAVID KOPP) believes that Steve is still alive but the other Podsters think he's committed suicide.

Carol (SHERRY MILLER) is sad about Steve's disappearance and Jim (ALAN THICKE) wants to cheer her up. He finds just the thing: The Vancouver Swing Society is hosting an excursion to the botanical gardens in Victoria. Something for both of them!

Meanwhile, the Podsters learn that Steve's replacement is Alistair Parrish (RYAN ROBBINS), the code-thief. Their new boss kills BoardX and assigns his new game, an embarrassing sword and sorcery adventure called SpriteQuest.

At the hotel, Jim and Carol meet Bertrand (JOHN NOVAK) and Justine (MARIA MARLOW). They like them very much until they learn they're at a sex convention for swingers. Carol is furious and gets even angrier when Jim implies she was romantically involved with Steve. She accepts Bertrand's invitation to an orgy. Jim imagines her as the centre of attention, but Carol just locks herself in the bathroom. The Podsters resist their new boss, but Kaitlin (EMILIE ULLERUP) wants to excel. Alistair has her install new software which she doesn't realize will monitor the Podster's productivity. Ethan is ready to revolt when Alistair cuts off their telephones and internet and moves his desk into jPod.

Ethan gets an anonymous instant message instructing him to watch Alistair, who behaves bizarrely then heads out. Ethan's phone rings and the voice of the mysterious "Babette" explains how she got Alistair to leave. The Podsters are back on line, too, and they send Ethan a news story that Steve has left a suicide note. Cowboy (BEN AYRES) passes out bottles of Chugatussin and the Podsters toast the memory of Steve and get tussed up.

When Alistair returns, he threatens to fire Ethan but Ethan counters by challenging him to a duel. If Alistair wins, they'll work on SpriteQuest and, if he loses, they'll finish BoardX. Alistair selects Rock Paper Scissors and then reveals that he was a three-time World Champion. Ethan's phone rings. It's Babette, telling him to watch for light signals that will indicate what to throw against Alistair.

Meanwhile, after trying to coax Carol to join the orgy, Bertrand tells her that Jim honestly thought it was a dance convention. Carol finds Jim and they are very happy to make up.

Ethan and Alistair face off. It's a dead heat as Ethan manages to keep throwing exactly what Alistair does. They agree to call it a draw: jPod will concentrate on SpriteQuest, but Alistair will move out of jPod and cancel production quotas.

Ethan asks the Podsters if anyone knows a Babette that works at N.A.

January 15th, 2008

Ryan's first episode of jPod (1x06: The Hero's Journey) will air tonight at 9pm on CBC in Canada.

Below is the episode synopsis from the Official jPod website ....

----------------------------------------------
Just as Ethan (DAVID KOPP) musters up the nerve to ask Kaitlin (EMILIE ULLERUP) out, her old flame Kevin (KYLE CASSIE) becomes a hero. Kevin is an actor, and his current gig is playing Klownsworthy, the Churley Burger spokesclown. As Klownsworthy, Kevin has apparently rescued three terminally-ill children from a burning building. Kevin's all over the news and when he's interviewed he tells the world he wants Kaitlin back.

Meanwhile, Jim (ALAN THICKE) is delighted to have an opportunity to do research for an upcoming bikesploitation movie when he and Carol (SHERRY MILLER) visit a biker's house in hopes of expanding her marijuana market.

Back at jPod, Steve (COLIN CUNNINGHAM) asks Ethan to attend a meeting he can't make. The Podsters are disappointed with Ethan for agreeing to go, but Kaitlin is impressed, and that was Ethan's plan. It may be the only way he can compete with a "hero."

The meeting marks the return of legendary Neotronic Arts employee, Alistair Parrish (RYAN ROBBINS), who was sent to American prison camp Guantànamo for creating an astonishing flight simulator game engine that involved flying jets into office towers.

When Ethan describes Cowboy as "the most talented coder in the building," Alistair wants to meet him. Cowboy and Alistair bond instantly and parse code together at a feverish pace.

Carol gets nowhere with the bikers -- they take her and Jim for narcs. On their second visit, Jim wears biker duds and Carol brings samples of her best bud.

Ethan gets invited to another meeting, but he is horrified when he learns that it's for Klownsworthy: The Game, on which Kevin will be intimately involved. Ethan and jPod are to start working on the game full time.

Kaitlin accompanies Kevin to Churley Burger to shoot a Klownsworthy commercial. Kevin is miked for sound but, not having been on camera for a while, he's nervous and his "spastic colon" starts acting up.

Carol and Jim again return to the bikers. Carol is mortified when Dwight (DARREN MOORE), a biker she'd given up for dead and tossed into a dumpster weeks before after a botched drug deal, answers the door. She drops her handgun and it goes off... accidentally, into Dwight's foot.

Cowboy proudly shows the Podsters the disc of his new source code, but Alistair grabs it from him and runs. Having used Cowboy to update his skills, Alistair is now the best coder in the building.

While in the toilet at Churley Burger, Kevin gets a collect phone call from his convict brother. Kevin tells him that he didn't intend to save the kids: he'd gone in to retrieve his cell phone (recently loaded up with Scooby-Doo ring tones) and, "Those brats latched on to me and wouldn't let me go." Of course, Klowsnworthy is miked and the entire crew and Churley executives listen in as he insults them and the company. It's the end of the road for Kevin's Klownsworthy gig.

Back at the Jarlewski home, Steve confesses to Jim that he's in love with Carol, so Jim asks Kam Fong (RAUGI YU) for a "favour" to deal with Steve.

Ryan appears in the trailer on the GlobalTV website for The GUARD. Check it out at the link below.

The Guard (Official Website)

Show Description: The Guard is a one-hour character-driven, original drama series that focuses on the lives of four imperfect, offbeat and sometimes difficult, but heroic Coast Guard rescue specialists looking for meaning in their own lives while enduring the daily dangers of life out on the Pacific Ocean.

Heroes are men and women, human beings with flaws and weaknesses, who knowingly place themselves at risk in order to save another. They should also know?never expect thanks.

The Pacific Ocean collides into Canada's mountainous coastline in one of the most beautiful and treacherous locations on earth, Port Hallet. Here, human beings go up against nature at their peril - because nature almost always wins. In a place like this, Rescue Specialists know that disasters follow few rules. Decisions, which may cost or save lives, are made as quickly as reflexes allow. This is a series about the men and women who make them.

Homegrown talent starring in this primetime Canadian original series include Steve Bacic (Andromeda) as Duty Captain, Miro Da Silva; Jeremy Guilbaut (Edgemont) as Rescue Specialist, Andrew Vanderlee; Zoie Palmer (Instant Star) as Rescue Specialist Carly Greig; and Claudette Mink (The Days) as Rescue Specialist Laura Nelson. David James Elliott, well known to television fans for JAG and Closer to Home, will play recurring character, David Nelson on the series.

There is action as the rescuers dangle from helicopters and plunge into seas, but the beating heart of the series is the peculiarly human topography of four particular rescue workers' "ordinary" lives. In life, as in work, these individuals, struggle to do the right thing, never entirely sure what the right thing is.

They are search and rescue workers, and they hold on to the belief that where there is life, there is always a horizon of hope.
